The Safe Way to Pick Up a Toddler: Protecting Little Joints and Growing Bodies

Updated: Jul 31

At Rise Learning Center, we understand how tempting it can be to scoop up a giggling toddler by their arms—especially when they’re reaching up for you. But did you know that lifting a child by their arms or hands can cause serious injuries like nursemaid’s elbow, a common and painful dislocation of the elbow joint in young children?

Toddlers’ joints are still developing, and their ligaments and bones are more delicate than they may seem.

The safest way to lift and carry a toddler is by supporting their torso, not their arms

The Right Way to Pick Up a Toddler

Whether you're a parent, teacher, or caregiver, here are some tips for safely picking up a toddler:

✅ Always Support Under the Arms and Around the Chest

Use both hands to gently lift the child by placing your hands under their armpits and wrapping your fingers around the sides of their torso. This distributes their weight more evenly and avoids putting stress on the arms or shoulders.

✅ Let the Child Help, When Possible

If the child is standing, let them help by raising their arms so you can lift them under the armpits. Encourage them to engage their core and legs for balance. This builds strength and confidence, too.

✅ When Lifting from the Ground

If the child is sitting or lying down, squat down (bend at the knees, not the waist), place one hand behind their back and the other under their bottom or thigh, then lift while keeping their body close to yours. This technique protects your back as well as the child’s joints.

What to Avoid

❌ Don’t Lift by the Hands, Wrists, or Arms

Even a gentle tug can lead to elbow dislocation or soft tissue injury. Never swing or lift a child by one or both arms—no matter how fun it might seem.

❌ Avoid Jerky Movements

Quick or twisting motions can stress the joints and muscles. Always move smoothly and steadily.
